5 things to do in Mauritius

A pristine lagoon with countless shades of blue, sandy beaches, warm and welcoming inhabitants… Mauritius is all this and yet so much more. It’s also about places to discover and things to do.

Golf

Mauritius was introduced to golf more than 150 years ago and has since become a popular destination in the Indian Ocean for players throughout the world. The country has several world-renowned 18 and 9-hole courses, some of which have been designed by prestigious players such as Bernhard Langer and Ernie Els. Set between sea and mountains, the courses offer varied challenges to suit each and every golfer, whether beginner or pro.

Hiking

Best known for its beaches and lagoons, Mauritius is also a land of hiking bound to seduce all those who enjoy long walks surrounded by nature. Even if the small volcanic island does not have a very rugged landscape (the country’s highest peak, the Piton de la Petite Rivière Noire, only stands at 828 meters above sea level), it nevertheless offers splendid views with its lagoon, mountains, waterfall and sugarcane fields. Hikers will get the chance to explore the 60-kilometer trails of the Black River Gorges National Park, and the different peaks of the island such as Le Pouce (in the centre), the Lion Mountain (in the South-East) and World Heritage Site in Le Morne (in the South West) – all offering unique and striking views.

Catamaran cruises

If you want to enjoy a day at sea, but differently, jump onboard a catamaran for a relaxing day. Mauritius is surrounded by beautiful islets such as Ile-aux-Cerfs, Flat Island and Ile aux Bernaches, where you can spend the day after a cruise. You can tan away, lulled by the peaceful sound of the sea, on the catamaran’s front deck, or, if you are feeling more adventurous, swim amidst colorful fish and corals. The crew will cook up a delicious BBQ for lunch and take care of everything, all to the sound of the sega, Mauritius’ signature music.

Skydiving

Thrill-seekers will be tempted by the sensation-packed parachute jump. The skydiving experience is accessible to all: no need to be an accomplished sportsperson or an experienced parachutist. This tandem jump is done with qualified instructors. The adventure begins with a flight over the northern part of the island at an altitude of 3000 meters. For about twenty minutes, you will be able to take in the superb panorama offered by the lagoon, the mountains and the sugarcane fields… And then, the jump, a vertiginous forty second skydive. This exceptional experience will be caught on film and you will be able to relive it or even share it with friends and family.

Scuba diving and snorkeling

Mauritius can boast magnificent lagoons where you can go scuba diving or snorkeling. You will then be able to admire, up close, surprisingly-shaped corals and shimmering-coloured fish. The dive sites around Mauritius are very varied ranging from arches and canyons to wrecks.
